Some bad performances can happen to the Colts - the Cows. the Steelers - people can't forget them. Guess what? Those were road games. At home, they lost to Philly at the start of the year in a game where the head coach had a brain fart. It hasn't happened at home since. There have been close games, but no, the Colts don't lose at home. This site is about science, though, so if we're going to talk about the game, we'll talk about the Colts top ranked passing attack. The Bengals are not too bad at defending the pass but they are dead last in sacks. Try countering that with a run game that should do OK against an average run D, maybe. We know a run D can often rise to the occasion at home. We'll make a Full play here but it looks like a heavy one once we factor in the cost of buying it down to 3. This one looks okay with the home team with playoff experience.

Can the Lions actually beat the Cows at home? Well, yeah, if they can stop the Cows running game and not fall for the ol' Loop pass. We think the Lions can stop the run game with that top ranked run D, even against the 2nd ranked rushing offense. At least they shouldn't have to spread themselves to thin. Hopefully, this will turn into a passing game with two pretty average pass D's being the big factor. Maybe Romo can outdo Stafford at home, but the 7 point spread makes this bet attractive, at least for a lite wager.

The GRIDLINE computer calls this one a Best Bet but we don't really see it. We know the Pants numbers are inflated by a couple of No-Shows, but with Zona's QB out the only offense figures to be generated by Carolina. The Cards aren't the dominant defensive team they have been in the past. They do keep the scoring down. It's either a good Red Zone defense or a willingness for opponents to settle. It's as if they know they can win 3-0. We're going to venture a chip on the Cards, hope that the Pants settle for a safe lead, and hope the Cards pick up some cheap points along the way. Man, we hate starting the new year trying to hook the home favorite but we are committed to the system. The odds are against us but any bet can win.

The system calls this one a PUSH at 3 points. We were inclined to go with Pittsburgh since they came through for us last week, then we remembered we weren't supposed to love or hate teams because of a single performance. Even though they've been doing well the last few weeks we can see the system leans their way mostly because of the home field. Now, get the shovel because the following is going to look like a bunch of crap.

Earlier this season we showed how we determined the real HFA and we did the calculations. At that time, it was about 10%, or +/-5% depending whether a team was home or away. That number was based on games played the last year and a half. Now, we redid the calculations and the HFA for the season is 6.6%. We have not adjusted it downward in mid-season, but clearly the arrow would be pointing squarely at the Ravens if we had. In other words, with the HFA declining the Ravens are the computer's play if our system had adjusted.

Looking at the numbers from a neutral field aspect, the Ravens appear to be the slightly better team. They are only average at passing, but the Steelers aren't very good at pass defense and it looks to us like the Ravens will be the ones who can run the ball, if they stick with it. The Steelers do have a good passing game and they have been protecting Ben well but they'll be facing a stronger pass rush.

We think the Ravens will give their running game a chance and this will be a very close and very good game. Call it a lite play at even money with the 3 points on another road dog.
