GRIDLINE is half human, half computer, but until the computer has enough info to join us, we're just like any other bettor. We are subject to our own emotions and biases and foibles. Our main foible tonight is our belief that Pagano is one of the better strategists in the game. The Colts still have to play, but Pagano doesn't make it any harder for them. The Eags, too, feature an innovative coach in Kelly. That quick, spread offense can cause headaches, but it also gives the ball back to their opponents real fast when it doesn't work. Making another, low-confidence, minimum play on the home boys. |

There's a way to beat the 49rs. Specifically, host them on the east coast for an early game. Other than that ... no. The Bears are going to try to pull out a win in Frisco. Good luck with that. Of course, GRIDLINE is a spread player, and 7 is a big number. It's still a little early to do any meaningful mathematical analysis. That comes in Week 04. For now, we're left with one question: Can the Bears beat the spread against the 49rs? To answer that question, we'll take our own advice, as laid out in GRIDLINE's featured article, "10 Tips to Start the Season":
Remember the "One-Fifth" rule. Historically, the points only come into play one-fifth of the time, about 20%. The favorites beat the spread half of the time and the dogs win outright 30% percent of the time, so if you know your team can't win the game but you think they can cover, keep this in mind. That's it. Man, do we need the GRIDLINE algorithm to kick in. Just going with the minimum again. |

| This should be a tough, tough ball game between two good teams. It might get a little sloppy with thunderstorms predicted. We don't have the GRIDLINE computer to rely on this early so we'll have to wing it. We can't point to a particular aspect of the game, all we can say is this game looks even. Last year, particularly early on, the Steelers had trouble with their offensive line. We're going to gamble that the last part of last year and a full offseason has remedied that somewhat. The Ravens always put out a strong team under Harbaugh's rule, but we have to wonder if losing some playmakers, most visibly Jacoby Jones and Ray Rice, hurt their big play ability. Pittsburgh has always been about big plays. We were tempted to play a Total but we missed betting so much that we just wanted the added effect of pulling for a team. Just going with the minimum. You would think we'd buy it up to 3 after sweating out that Monday niter, but we'll never learn. |
